Luckygirl Gallery presents Continuum, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Paul Solevad, marking his return to the gallery following his inclusion in our inaugural show.
Solevad received his B.F.A. in painting from California Lutheran University in 1992, sharpening his resolve during six months in Glasgow, Scotland, where the work of Ken Currie, John Bellany, and Stephen Campbell, alongside the broader current of European and American Expressionism, set the direction for his painting life. He spent the following seven years in commercial art studios in the San Francisco Bay Area, building the daily working habits that still anchor his studio practice.
His process begins with pen and paper; drawing and painting run alongside each other, each feeding the other. Since relocating from Portland to Bellingham, Washington in 2024, Solevad has drawn on the landscape around him, translating it into abstracted, conceptual interpretations of nature. The title Continuum, a word that first came to him years ago, carries the idea of an ongoing organic interpretation, the collective energy of nature and of us, now resurfacing in paintings of familiar landscapes, places known and not yet known, built from fractal patterns of organic form.
Each painting in Continuum stands on its own, but the works share a vocabulary of color, line, and texture, windows into a single visual conversation.
